Barrel Racing Riders

Barrel racing is an exciting sport and one that doesn`t get as much attention as show jumping or dressage. Watching those riders fly around the barrels at breakneck speed is nerve-wracking but also mesmerizing. Although the sport is huge in certain parts of the States (and minimally in other countries as well), many people have never heard of even the most famous of the barrel racing riders. Because they`re so impressive and deserve some recognition, here are some of the most famous barrel racing riders today.

Brittany Pozzi
From Victoria, Texas, Pozzi has earned over $1 million over her career as a barrel racer. With two world titles under her belt and more than 10 other wins, she`s definitely up there in the top racers today. She`s still going strong so hopefully we`ll see more of her wins in coming years as well.

Charmayne James
James and her horse Scamper are one of the most famous pairs in barrel racing history. She`s got dozens of wins under her belt, some of the fastest times ever recorded and they have gone to the World Championships just under a dozen times. Together, they have earned 10 World Chapion titles, 10 Rodeo Houston titles, as well as some smaller known races as well. In the barrel racing community, this pair iswell known and ultimately incredibly well respected.

James also holds the record for the most consecutive NFR qualifications with 19 in a row.

Unfortunately, Scamper passed away four years ago, so there won`t be any more incredible wins from this amazing, winning pair.

Sherry Cervi
With a family who loved barrel racing and was very active in the community, it was no wonder that Cervi went on to become one of the best barrel racers the world has ever seen. She`s a 4 times world champion with countless other titles under her belt. Over her career in barrel racing, she`s won more than $3 million. If that`s not success, I don`t know what is.

It`s not all about money though for Cervi. She also began the Youth Championships, which have been named in her honor the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships. Anything that encourages the youth to push themselves to succeed is a win in our book.

Tad Lucas
This list wouldn`t be complete if we didn`t include Lucas known as the Rodeo`s First Lady. Earning nearly the equivalent of $200,000 in winnings during the Great Depression (and being a woman), Lucas was wildly successful, courageous and fearless. She now has an award named after her, given to barrel racers and other rodeo riders who exhibit the same fearless characteristics she had.

Barrel racing has a rich and fascinating history, with some incredible people who have done amazing things. Although they may not be the most famous to everyone, these names are special in the rodeo community, so it`s time to pay them homage.
